This part weekend we had two of our AMYS Instructors, Master Samy and Master Jared, compete at the 2018 US Collegiate National Taekwondo Championships at American University in Washington, DC. After a series of fights, Master Samy achieved Gold and Master Jared earned Silver in their respective Women’s Finweight -46kg and Men’s Lightweight -74kg categories.

To achieve the Gold Medal, Master Samy scored 9-5 against Lyanne Chang of University of California- San Diego (UCSD) in her first match. Afterwards, she won in the semi-finals versus Nina Anwar from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The finals were the last match of the day and had everyone’s attention when Moras threw a spin hook kick that almost knocked out her opponent, winning 15-8 against Cynthia Nazario of Hunter College-New York.

Master Jared had several exciting matches throughout the day as well. His first fight was against Diego Ruiz from UT Arlington which he won 28-27. His semifinal was against MIT’s Ajay Saini, won 19-7. His final match was full of close calls and fast-flying kicks, but unfortunately a 9-19 loss against Andrew Snow of George Mason University which earned him his Silver Medal.

A huge congratulations to both of our awesome instructors and to Master Moras for coaching them & helping lead them to their success. This is a great kick-off for our AMYS Team for the year’s competitions! Next we have the Utah State Taekwondo Championships in a couple weeks and the 2018 US National Championships later this year which will be held in Salt Lake City, UT for the first time in history.
