Congratulations!!

We are so excited to announce the results of our AMYS Team at the 2017 US National Championships!! This national competition was held in Detroit, MI from June 29th-July 6th with over 3,600 competitors. Our AMYS Team consisted of 8 athletes: Andrew Dean, Andrew Ruano, Anthony Wald, Ayden Christensen, Fiorella Capella, Jared Reed, Maddox Cuello, McKenzie Sou– all coached by Master Melany Moras.

Our 8 athletes competed in several events including Poomsae, Freestyle Poomsae, and Sparring. They had been preparing for this competition for months and were able to bring home a total of 4 medals- 3 Gold and 1 Silver. These results are extraordinary as divisions are typically huge at Nationals and require a lot of fights and perseverance.

Jared Reed is one of our AMYS Instructors and fought in the -74kg Lightweight Black Belt Senior Men’s category and earned the Gold Medal. He had tremendous success at this competition, winning his first match by knockout within the first second of the first round. He had great matches during the rest of the day, winning his next match 21-10, then 31-11, then by WDR, and his final match 22-1 to become the US National Champion. We are very excited for his success and wish him the best of luck as he has now qualified to compete in US Team Trials next year to become part of the US National Team.

Ayden Christensen competed in the -53kg Red Belt 12-14yrs Cadet category and secured a Gold Medal. He had 3 tough matches, winning his first match 32-12, then 25-5, and his final 21-20. Ayden’s perseverance showed throughout all his matches, down to the last few seconds when he received the last point to win the Gold Medal. This is Ayden’s first time competing at the US National Championships and we were so proud of his results and effort!

Andrew Ruano earned the Silver Medal in the -63kg Junior Male Black Belt division. He had 5 matches throughout the day, winning his first one in GP, then taking out the #1 seed by 12-8, then 14-12, and then 17-11. He had a great final match, but unfortunately lost 19-11. He earned a spot on the US Junior National B-Team and is fired up to keep growing and competing in the Senior division next year.

Some of our other competitors included Andrew Dean, who won Gold in his -80kg Red Belt Male division. He did an exhibition fight against a Black Belt and put up an awesome fight showing off all the hard work he’s been putting in training. Yellow Belts Anthony Wald & Maddox Cuello put on a great performance at their first-ever national competition. Unfortunately, they lost their opening match, but gained lots of valuable experience for the road ahead! Fiorella Capella & McKenzie Sou also had great high-energy matches with awesome headshots, but didn’t get the win this time.

We are so proud of all our competitors who trained, fought, and gave their all at the US National Championships. You don’t always win, but you always learn! This was a very successful competition for our AMYS Team, we are excited to keep growing and preparing for next year’s US National Championships– right near our hometown in Salt Lake City!!
